WNC Schools Deserve Fair Share of Lottery Cash

The $21.3 billion budget compromise reached between the state House and Senate falls short of giving 53 school districts, including every mountain district, a fair share of lottery proceeds. That’s patently wrong and should not be acceptable to mountain lawmakers. A compromise that continues to cheat mountain counties of their fair share of the capital needed to build new schools at a time of unprecedented population growth in North Carolina is not tolerable. Many of the counties penalized by the unfair formula devised for distributing the funds are among the fastest growing.

Lottery Transfer of Over $68.5 Million

Today the North Carolina Education Lottery (NCEL) transferred $68,580,917 to the State Education Lottery Fund for sales during the first two months of the 4th quarter of the fiscal year (April 1 – May 31). This brings the total transferred to the State Education Fund for Fiscal Year 2007-2008, which runs July 1, 2007, through May 31, 2008, to $318,808,453.

Lottery tickets have been selling like wildfire since Kings Mountain resident Jeff Wilson won $88.1 million playing Powerball, said Angi White, assistant manager of the Petro Express in Kings Mountain where the winning ticket was sold.

The North Carolina Education Lottery (NCEL) is introducing three new instant scratch-off tickets this week that combined have a total of over $21 million in prizes. "Tic Tac Toe Gone Wild" along with "Triple Tripler" and "Firecracker Cash Explosion" will be in stores starting tomorrow.
