The $21.3 billion budget compromise reached between the state House and Senate falls short of giving 53 school districts, including every mountain district, a fair share of lottery proceeds. That’s patently wrong and should not be acceptable to mountain lawmakers. A compromise that continues to cheat mountain counties of their fair share of the capital needed to build new schools at a time of unprecedented population growth in North Carolina is not tolerable. Many of the counties penalized by the unfair formula devised for distributing the funds are among the fastest growing.
